Artist response Group Project / Introduction to Animation
At the beginning of the project, we went to Tate Modern and Welcome Collection to choose an artist. It was very hard as there was many inspiring and interesting pieces of art.
We decided that we will make an animation based on a British-Nigerian artist, Yinka Shonibare CBE and his beautiful work “Refugee Astronaut III”. We got inspired by his unique and trademark material on the spacesuit, as well as the random objects that he is carrying. This sculpture gives us reflection about the seriousness of global warming and the future because of our actions. We chose this artist because we liked the meaning of his work by showing the serious problem in our society. We also chose him because of these positive, colourful patterns on the spacesuit, the detail in his work especially the objects in the net. The astronaut is in a desperate situation that in his net are his personal and random objects like chair, books, kettle or plates.

YINKA SHONIBARE CBE
The story is about human in the future who had to leave earth which was already dead we came up to unknown. „We living is unknown ’’ is our main mind. We make war, make garbage, and we kill animals; So how about our future? It’s unknown. The artist assumed a future- we will kill the earth and we will have to find a new planet. The character wears cloth that is positive however, he is lonely and this story is actually sad.
